Winter transforms Spiti Valley into a surreal, snow-covered Himalayan desert, raw, silent, and breathtakingly beautiful. This 9-day road expedition takes you deep into one of India’s most remote high-altitude regions, following the historic Shimla-Kinnaur route, the only accessible corridor during peak winter.
From the pine valleys of Sangla and the sacred views of Kinnaur Kailash in Kalpa to the frozen serenity of Nako Lake and the 1000 year old Tabo Monastery, every day reveals a new layer of Himalayan heritage. As you move deeper into Spiti, dramatic cliffside monasteries like Dhankar, the iconic Key Monastery, and remote high-altitude villages such as Hikkim, Komic, and Langza unfold against vast white landscapes.
This is not a luxury escape, it’s an authentic winter expedition. Expect sub-zero temperatures, stark mountain beauty, frozen waterfalls, and the kind of silence only high altitudes can offer.
For those who seek something beyond ordinary road trips, Winter Spiti is not just a journey, it’s an experience of resilience, culture, and raw Himalayan magic.

Winter temperatures in Spiti can drop to -15°C to -25°C at night, especially in Kaza and higher villages like Komic. Day temperatures may range between -5°C to 5°C, depending on sunlight and snowfall. Strong winds can make it feel even colder.
Yes, but road conditions can be unpredictable. Snowfall, black ice, or temporary blockages may cause delays. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) clears roads regularly, but buffer time is always recommended.
Yes. Winter travel in high-altitude regions is weather-dependent. In case of road closures or heavy snowfall, minor route adjustments may be made in the interest of safety.
No. The Manali-Kunzum Pass route remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall. Winter access to Spiti is only possible via the Shimla-Kinnaur route, which is the route followed in this itinerary.
Stays are in local guesthouses and hotels. Due to extreme cold, some properties may provide common washrooms or limited hot water (usually one bucket per person) during peak winter months. Electric heaters, if available, may be chargeable.
Electricity is available but power cuts are common. Carry power banks. Mobile network works intermittently — BSNL and Jio postpaid have better connectivity, but internet access is limited.
This is not a trek, but it is a high-altitude winter expedition. You should be comfortable sitting for long drives and walking short distances in snow. Basic fitness and good immunity help.
Yes, since Kaza is at ~3,800M and villages like Komic go above 4,500M. Proper hydration, slow movement, and acclimatization reduce risks. Avoid alcohol during initial days.
