Overview

The Adi Kailash Bike Expedition takes you deep into the Kumaon Himalayas, near the Indo-Nepal border, where rugged mountain roads meet sacred geography. Often called Chhota Kailash, Adi Kailash is believed to resemble Mount Kailash in Tibet and holds deep spiritual significance. But reaching it is not just about belief, it’s about the journey through some of Uttarakhand’s most remote and dramatic landscapes.

The ride follows the Kali River, which forms the natural boundary between India and Nepal, before entering the Inner Line region beyond Dharchula. As the terrain narrows and off-road stretches begin, the experience shifts from a scenic ride to a true Himalayan expedition. High-altitude villages like Gunji serve as gateways to the sacred peak, while Parvati Kund (Gauri Kund) sits quietly at its base, surrounded by stark mountain beauty.

With a maximum elevation of around 4,500M, this moderate-level expedition blends adventure, culture, and spiritual depth. It’s designed for riders who want more than just views, those who seek connection with the mountains, the borderlands, and the stories carried through these valleys.

Itinerary

Day 1: Haldwani → Pithoragarh
Approx. 200 km | 7–8 hrs
Maximum Altitude: 1,650M

We begin from Haldwani, near Kathgodam, historically the last railway head during the British era for goods entering Kumaon. As we ride upward, the terrain transitions from plains to winding mountain roads.

We pass Nanakmatta Sahib, a revered Sikh pilgrimage site, before entering deeper Himalayan terrain. The Kali River begins accompanying us as we approach Pithoragarh district; this river forms the natural boundary between India and Nepal. From Gurna Temple, we get sweeping views of the Soar Valley, offering our first real sense of Himalayan scale.

Overnight in Pithoragarh.

Day 2: Pithoragarh → Dharchula → Gunji
Approx. 170 km | 8–9 hrs
Maximum Altitude: 3,200M

We ride toward Dharchula, a historic border town that has long served as a trade point between India and Nepal. From here, Inner Line territory begins.

After crossing Dharchula, the road narrows and off-road stretches begin. The Kali River runs alongside us through deep valleys, and seasonal waterfalls cut across the cliffs. The terrain becomes raw and remote this is where the expedition truly begins.

By evening, we reach Gunji, a high-altitude village near the confluence of the Kali and Kuti rivers. Acclimatization is important from this point onward.

Day 3: Gunji → Adi Kailash → Gunji
Approx. 70 km Round Trip | 4–5 hrs
Maximum Altitude: 4,572M (Adi Kailash Region)

Today we ride toward Adi Kailash, often called “Chhota Kailash.” This sacred Himalayan peak resembles Mount Kailash in Tibet and holds strong spiritual significance.

At its base lies Parvati Kund (Gauri Kund), a glacial lake surrounded by stark mountain terrain. A small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva stands nearby. The region sits above 4,500 meters, making this the highest point of the expedition.

After spending time here, we descend back to Gunji for the night to maintain safe acclimatization.

Day 4: Gunji → Om Parvat → Dharchula
Approx. 160 km | 8–9 hrs
Maximum Altitude: 4,300M (Om Parvat region)

We ride toward Om Parvat, known for the naturally formed snow pattern resembling the sacred “ॐ” symbol (visible in clear weather). The route passes through Vyas Valley, traditionally associated with Sage Vyas.

The terrain remains rugged with dramatic valley views and border landscapes. As we descend toward Dharchula, altitude drops significantly, giving the body a comfortable recovery window after two high-altitude days.

Day 5: Dharchula → Mukteshwar
Approx. 230 km | 9 hrs
Maximum Altitude: 2,285M

We leave the border belt and gradually ride into the mid-Himalayan zone. Roads improve and greenery increases. We pass Dhol Ashram before reaching Mukteshwar.

Mukteshwar Temple, believed to be over 350 years old, sits atop a ridge with views of the Nanda Devi range on clear days. The evening sunset here provides a calm contrast to the rugged terrain of previous days.

Day 6: Mukteshwar → Haldwani (Departure Day)
Approx. 70 km | 3–4 hrs riding + descent buffer
In the morning, we visit Chauli Ki Jali, a dramatic cliff viewpoint known locally for its rock formations and valley views.

We depart Mukteshwar at approximately 12:30 PM and reach Haldwani by around 6:30 PM. This timing allows participants to comfortably plan onward travel to Delhi the same evening.
