Overview

This is a 3-day trek that packs in more than most longer ones. You start from the quiet meadows of Chopta at 2,600M, walk up through rhododendron forests to Tungnath Temple at 3,680M, the highest Shiva temple in the world, and then climb a little further to Chandrashila Summit at 4,000M where the Himalayas open up in every direction.

Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath Dome all of it right in front of you. On the way back, you stop at Deoriatal, a small alpine lake famous for reflecting the Chaukhamba peaks on clear mornings.

It is a beginner-friendly trek, but the views at the top will make even seasoned trekkers stop and stare. Three days, two nights, and a summit that stays with you.

Itinerary

DAY 1   Dehradun to Chopta

  • We pick you up from Prince Chowk, Dehradun at 7:00 AM and the drive to Chopta begins. It is about 9 to 10 hours but the road earns its time.
  • We pass through Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers meet to form the Ganga. If you have never seen a river confluence like this, stop and take it in.
  • Further ahead is Rudraprayag, where the Alaknanda and Mandakini meet. These are not just rivers, they carry the whole spiritual weight of Garhwal with them.
  • As we climb higher, the roads get narrower, the air gets cooler, and the mountains start filling up the windshield.
  • We arrive in Chopta by evening and check into our deluxe camps inside the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Dinner is followed by a briefing from your trek leader covering the trail, altitude, and what tomorrow looks like.

First night in the forest at Chopta. Tomorrow we walk up to the highest Shiva temple in the world, so get a good sleep.

DAY 2   Chopta to Tungnath to Chandrashila Summit

  • After breakfast we start the ascent toward Tungnath Temple at 3,680M, the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the five sacred Panch Kedar shrines.
  • The trail is 3.5 km of stone-paved path winding through alpine meadows and rhododendron forests. It is steady and moderate, taking about 3 to 4 hours at a comfortable pace.
  • Spend some time at the temple. It is a quiet, powerful place and the effort of getting here makes it feel completely different from any temple you have visited by road.
  • From Tungnath, we climb a steeper 1.5 km to Chandrashila Summit at 4,000M. At the top, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath Dome, and Bandarpunch are all right there in front of you.
  • Packed lunch at the summit, then we descend back to Chopta. On clear evenings, watch the Chaukhamba massif turn golden at sunset from camp.

Summit done. Views ticked. Tonight dinner at camp and a lot of stories to tell. Day 3 starts early so rest well.

DAY 3   Chopta to Deoriatal to Dehradun

  • Early morning we drive about an hour to Sari Village, the starting point for the Deoriatal hike.
  • The hike is a short 2.5 km walk up to Deoriatal Lake at 2,400M, a beautiful alpine lake that on clear mornings mirrors the Chaukhamba peaks on its surface. It looks like a photograph but it is real.
  • Spend some time at the lake before heading back down to Sari. It is an easy, quiet walk and a good way to end the trek.
  • Post lunch we start the long drive back to Dehradun, arriving around 11:00 PM.

Three days, a 4,000M summit, the highest Shiva temple on Earth, and a lake that reflects the Himalayas. Not bad for a long weekend.
